Happy Encounters: Toronto Becomes First City To Mandate Green Roofs

In this world of concrete, utilising the many available rooftops to build a green environment is just what we need.

Summer is just around the corner, and for those who live in big cities, that means spring warmth will soon give way to searing heat. Green roofs can help regulate city temperatures, giving people, and the electrical grid, a much needed break.

Toronto is the first city in North America with a bylaw that requires roofs to be green. And we're not talking about paint. A green roof, also known as a living roof, uses various hardy plants to create a barrier between the sun's rays and the tiles or shingles of the roof. The plants love the sun, and the building (and its inhabitants) enjoy more comfortable indoor temperatures as a result.
Toronto's new legislation will require all residential, commercial and institutional buildings over 2,000 square meters to have between 20 and 60 percent living roofs. Although it's been in place since early 2010, the bylaw will apply to new industrial development as of April 30, 2012. While this is the first city-wide mandate involving green roofs, Toronto's decision follow's in the footsteps of other cities, like Chicago and New York.
Under the direction of Mayor Richard Daley the city of Chicago put a 38,800 square foot green roof on a 12 story skyscraper in 2000. Twelve years later, that building now saves $5000 annually on utility bills, and Chicago boasts 7 million square feet of green roof space. New York has followed suit, and since planting a green roof on the Con Edison Learning Centre in Queens, the buildings managers have seen a 34 percent reduction of heat loss in winter, and reduced summer heat gain by 84 percent.
But lower utility bills aren't the only benefit of planting a living roof. In addition to cooling down the city, green roofs create cleaner air, cleaner water, and provide a peaceful oasis for people, birds and insects in an otherwise polluted, concrete and asphalt-covered environment.

Happy Encounters: Wallet with $10,000 Left on Laguna Beach Park Bench Returned to Owner

Would you do the same if you found $10,000 in a park?

Wallet with $10,000 Left on Laguna Beach Park Bench Returned to Owner

A restaurateur from south Florida who just moved to Orange County got a taste of Southern California kindness when someone returned his lost wallet and the $10,000 it contained.
The man mistakenly left the cash-stuffed wallet on a beach bench Saturday in Laguna Beach. He had withdrawn the hefty amount to pay a contractor for renovating a new restaurant that he plans to open on Pacific Coast Highway, according to police.
He went for a walk near Main Beach and sat down on the bench at about 1:15 p.m., but forgot to take his wallet when he left. A passer-by found the wallet and handed it to lifeguards, police said.
"When the lifeguards opened the wallet, they see all that cash in it and  call the police," Lt. Jason Kravetz said.
The wallet contained a Florida driver's license, so officers began searching online for a phone number. They found a cell phone number and called the owner.
The man was "shocked" when he found all the money was still in the wallet, Kravetz said. He told police he was simply distracted and forgot about the wallet when he left the park bench.

Happy Encounters: World Happiness Report indicated that Denmark is the world's happiest country

Want to know where is the happiest place to live in?  UN has recently issued the World Happiness Report, and Denmark tops it all.  Read on to find out more of which are the top 20 happiest countries in the world.

(From NY Daily News) If cheery locals are the thing that you look for on holiday, Scandinavia is the place to go to, a new report has suggested.
The World Happiness Report, released this week by the United Nations, took a look at the mood in countries around the world to determine which ones were the most content with their lot.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Nordic countries -- with a healthy work/life belance, top-notch healthcare and schools and high average incomes -- came at the top of the list, with Denmark reaching the coveted top place.
Finland came in second spot, Norway in third and the Netherlands -- the highest non-Nordic nation to make the list, was placed fourth, just above Canada in fifth place.
But does a happy country necessarily mean a warm welcome? Well, comparing the results of the UN survey to previous studies suggest that it might -- the Netherlands has previously been recognized as among the most friendly European nations to tourists, while Canada and Australia (both among the ten happiest countries) have also been lauded by HSBC for their friendliness to expats.
Unsurprisingly, there is also a correlation with wealth -- the ten happiest places are all developed nations -- although it was by no means universal.
Germany, the richest country in Europe, came a relatively low 30th place, while Japan ranked 44th and South Korea managed 56th.
At the bottom of the table came several African nations where life is undeniably hard, including Sierra Leone and Togo.
The world's happiest countries
1. Denmark
2. Finland
3. Norway
4. Netherlands
5. Canada
6. Switzerland
7. Sweden
8. New Zealand
9. Australia
10. Ireland
11. USA
12. Costa Rica
13. Austria
14. Israel
15. Belgium
16. Luxembourg
17. United Arab Emirates
18. United Kingdom
19. Venezuela
20. Iceland

Happy Encounters: Chocolate Helps Slimming

For those who loves chocolate and are worried of getting fat, here's some good news for you! Check out what this 'article' has to say on how chocolate may help keep people slim.

People who eat chocolate regularly tend to be thinner, new research suggests.
The findings come from a study of nearly 1,000 US people that looked at diet, calorie intake and body mass index (BMI) - a measure of obesity.
It found those who ate chocolate a few times a week were, on average, slimmer than those who ate it occasionally.
Even though chocolate is loaded with calories, it contains ingredients that may favour weight loss rather than fat synthesis, scientists believe.
Despite boosting calorie intake, regular chocolate consumption was related to lower BMI in the study, which is published in Archives of Internal Medicine.
The link remained even when other factors, like how much exercise individuals did, were taken into account.
And it appears it is how often you eat chocolate that is important, rather than how much of it you eat. The study found no link with quantity consumed.
According to the researchers, there is only one chance in a hundred that their findings could be explained by chance alone.
But the findings only suggest a link - not proof that one factor causes the other.
Lead author Dr Beatrice Golomb, from the University of California at San Diego, said: "Our findings appear to add to a body of information suggesting that the composition of calories, not just the number of them, matters for determining their ultimate impact on weight."
This is not the first time scientists have suggested that chocolate may be healthy for us.
Other studies have claimed chocolate may be good for the heart.
Consumption of certain types of chocolate has been linked to some favourable changes in blood pressure, insulin sensitivity and cholesterol level.
And chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, does contain antioxidants which can help to mop up harmful free radicals - unstable chemicals that can damage our cells.
Dr Golomb and her team believe that antioxidant compounds, called catechins, can improve lean muscle mass and reduce weight - at least studies in rodents would suggest this might be so.

Happy Song of the Day: Dream Big by Ryan Shupe & the Rubberband

When you cry be sure to dry your eyes
'Cause better days are sure to come
And when you smile be sure to smile wide
Don't let them know that they have won
And when you walk, walk with pride
Don't show the hurt inside
Because the pain will soon be gone

And when you dream, dream big

As big as the ocean blue
'Cause when you dream it might come true
When you dream, dream big

When you laugh be sure to laugh out loud

'Cause it will carry all your cares away
And when you see, see the beauty all around and in yourself
And it'll help you feel okay
And when you pray, pray for strength
To help you carry on
When the troubles come your way

Happy Encounters: Child Falls Asleep While Skiing

This is such a funny video of a child falling asleep while skiing!

(From The Telegraph) Despite the sunshine and fresh air, the tired little skier, named Cody, appears to nod off on the slopes still standing in his ski boots.
As he totters forwards and back, then side to side, the sleepy child is propped up by his rigid footwear.
Cody's snooze comes to an abrupt end when an inquisitive child upset the balance with a prod to the sleeper's skis.

Character of the Day: Indonesia’s Seven-year-old Mountain Climber

It must take some character and stamina for a 7 year-old boy to climb such steep mountains that even adults find difficult.  Good luck with Arya's climb on Russia's Mt. Elbrus on 23Jul12!

from WeirdAsiaNews

Extract from Indonesia’s Seven-year-old Mountain Climber

Arya Cahaya Mulya Sugiarto, 7, from Pemekasan, Madura, East Java, has an unusual mission.  He climbs mountains simply because they are there.

Arya has already climbed 14 mountains and has set his sights on the world’s highest peaks. His achievements include: Mount Semeru in Java in August 2010 when he was just 5, and then Mount Rinjani in Lombok in 2011.

July 23 is National Children’s Day, and Arya will celebrate it by attempting to conquer Russia’s Mt. Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe. He plans to top even himself to mark Universal Children’s Day on November 20 by scaling Imja Tse, better known as Island Peak, an even higher summit in the Himalayas.

Happy Encounters: Poo for Tea from China's National Treasure, the Giant Panda

Here is something new and interesting.. using Panda's as organic fertilizers for tea.  Would you want to have a sip of that?

YA'AN, China (Reuters) - China's national treasure, the giant panda, will become even more precious if one businessman succeeds in using their dung to grow organic green tea he intends to sell for over $200 a cup.

An Yanshi, an entrepreneur in southwest China, grows the tea in mountainous Ya'an in Sichuan province using tons of excrement from panda bears living at nearby breeding centers.

The first batch of panda dung tea will be sold in lots of 50 grams that will cost some 22,000 yuan ($3,500) each, a price An said makes it the world's most expensive tea. Most people use about 3 grams of tea per cup.

An defended the steep price, saying he would channel profits from the initial batches into an environmental fund. Future batches would be cheaper, he added.

"I thank heaven and earth for blessing us with this environmental panda tea," the 41-year-old former teacher and journalist said at a weekend event to promote the tea.

"I just want to convey to the people of the world the message of turning waste into something useful, and the culture of recycling and using organic fertilizers."

Dressed in a panda suit to promote his tea, An invited a dozen or so guests to help hand-pick the first batch of tea at his plantation at the weekend.

The fertilizer made the tea a health boon, An said, because pandas only eat wild bamboo and absorb only a fraction of the nutrients in their food. And pandas make plenty of fertilizer.

"They are like a machine that is churning out organic fertilizer." An said. "They keep eating and they keep producing feces.  Also, they absorb less than 30 percent of the nutrition from the food, and that means more than 70 percent of the nutrients are passed out in their feces."

After brewing the first pickings, An described the tea as fragrant and smooth. Some of his guests, however, were not impressed.

"It's sold at such a sky-high price, perhaps this is just hype," said 49-year-old Li Ximing. ($1 = 6.3227 Chinese yuan)

Happy Encounters: Great-great grandmother breaks the paragliding record on her 101st birthday

Can you imagine yourself still paragliding when you're 101 years old? Well Mary Allen Hardison did it on her 101st birthday, breaking the Guinness World's Record as the oldest woman to paraglide tandem. Well impressive!

(From Reuters) A great-great grandmother in America was declared the oldest woman to paraglide tandem on Tuesday after taking to the air to celebrate her 101st birthday.

In confirming the feat, Guinness World Records said Mary Allen Hardison's historic flight near Salt Lake City on September 1 last year was "pushing record breaking to new heights."

Hardison, of Ogden, Utah, said she decided to go paragliding after her 75-year-old son Allen took up the sport.

"Just because you are old doesn't mean you have to sit on your duff all day," Hardison told Reuters.

Hardison's flight was cheered on by her great-grandchildren, who have witnessed other such birthday adventures: On her 90th birthday, Hardison rode all the adult rides at Disneyland, and for her next she plans test out a mountain slide in Utah.

She invited other centenarians to break her new record.

"I heard of one fellow that hadn't walked for quite a while and he decided when he heard about me he would walk again. So he got up and started walking again," she said.

"He said if she can do that, I can do this. If I can inspire some of the older people to get up and do something it's well worth it."

Happy Song of the Day: I Believe I Can Fly

I Believe I Can Fly - by R. Kelly

I used to think that I could not go on
And life was nothing but an awful song
But now I know the meanin' of true love
I'm leanin' on the everlasting arms

If I can see it then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me running through that open door
I believe I can fly, I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly

See I was on the verge of breakin' down
Sometimes silence can seem so loud
There are miracles in life I must achieve
But first I know it starts inside of me oh

If I can see it then I can be it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me runnin' through that open door
I believe I can fly, I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly

Hey 'cuz I believe in me
If I can see it then I can do it
If I just believe it, there's nothing to it

I believe I can fly
I believe I can touch the sky
I think about it every night and day
Spread my wings and fly away
I believe I can soar
I see me runnin' through that open door
I believe I can fly, I believe I can fly
I believe I can fly

Hey if I just spread my wings
I can fly
I can fly
I can fly, hey
If I just spread my wings
I can fly
Fly eye, eye

Quote of the Day: Gratitude

Quote of the Day: Gratitude is one of the sweet shortcuts to finding peace of mind and happiness inside. No matter what is going on outside of us, there's always something we could be grateful for. - Barry Neil Kaufman

Before the end of a hectic day, take 10 minutes of quiet moment just before you sleep to reflect upon your day, so you can appreciate everything that has happened around you.  By doing so over time, you'll realize you would have more special days than having just lived for another day.

Happy Encounters: Man Takes Flight with his Bird-like Wings

This looks well cool and impressive!

Man Flaps Android-Powered Bird Wings, Flies with Wii

Imagine strapping on a pair of giant multicolored wings, except they’re not actually attached to your arms — you control them without actually touching them, waving your hands up and down in the air, birdlike, causing the wings to move in tandem. Before you know it, you’re up, up and away, rising into the sky like the lovechild of a peacock and an albatross, soaring over the terrain without so much as a single jet turbine or propeller blade.

The guy in the video up top — a Dutchman named  Jarno Smeets with mad engineering skills — claims to have done exactly that at a park in south Holland this last weekend on March 18. And all he used to pull it off, in addition to a pair of giant, flexible wings built out of kites and fortified by carbon windsurf masts, was a Wii controller and an HTC smartphone.

Happy Song of the Day: Remember When - Carl and Ellie from UP

This is such a beautiful song.  Would like to dedicate this song to all couples who's been married for 25+ years and those who believe in true and long lasting love.

Remember When - by Alan Jackson

Remember when I was young and so were you
And time stood still and love was all we knew
You were the first, so was I
We made love and then you cried
Remember when

Remember when we vowed the vows and walked the walk
Gave our hearts, made the start and it was hard
We lived and learned, life threw curves
There was joy, there was hurt
Remember when

Remember when old ones died and new were born
And life was changed, disassembled, rearranged
We came together, fell apart
And broke each other's hearts
Remember when

Remember when the sound of little feet was the music
We danced to week to week
Brought back the love, we found trust
Vowed we'd never give it up
Remember when

Remember when thirty seemed so old
Now lookin' back, it's just a steppin' stone
To where we are, where we've been
Said we'd do it all again
Remember when

Remember when we said when we turned gray
When the children grow up and move away
We won't be sad, we'll be glad
For all the life we've had
And we'll remember when

Remember when
Remember when

Happy Encounters: Blair Bangerter Built a Replica of the 'Up' House in Salt Lake City

Wow.. someone has actually built the house from the disney/pixar movie 'Up'.

Up house in real life

Up house in the movie

The sherbet-colored structure sits at the intersection of Meadowside Drive and Herriman Rose Boulevard here, but you don’t need directions to find it. Just look for the swarm of helium-filled balloons that the developer tied to the chimney of a house that has a gabled roof, scalloped siding and a garden hose neatly coiled next to the porch — all details taken from “Up,” the 2009 hit about an old man and his flying abode.

Bangerter Homes, which specializes in custom-built dwellings, is marketing the 2,800-square-foot reproduction as “The Disney/Pixar ‘Up’ House,” using stills from the film and the official logos of Disney and its Pixar Animation Studios subsidiary. The listing price: $400,000.
So far, serious bidders are scarce. But over the last few weeks about 27,000 people paid $10 each for a peek inside, with most of the proceeds going to charity.

The man behind the design is Blair Bangerter, a son of Norman H. Bangerter, who served as governor of Utah from 1985 to 1993. The younger Mr. Bangerter first saw “Up” two years ago. A longtime animation buff, he said that he was thrilled that the film gave a starring role to his other passion — houses — and became preoccupied with replicating the colorful Victorian in real life.

Continue here to find out more on how Blair negotiated a deal with Disney/Pixar.
