Happy Encounters: MIT to offer free online courses to all

Not sure how long this concept has been around for, but being able to take courses for free from MIT surely sounds interesting.

The disruption of higher education just got very interesting. It appears that the disruptors — private, online universities — are being disrupted at their own game. One of the pantheons of traditional on-site learning, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has announced it will be launching online courses that will be free and open to the world. And, in the process, plans to offer certificates to students successfully completing the coursework.
The program, called MITx, will represent the next evolution in online offerings, extending the university’s already well-establishedOpenCourseWare, which provides materials on about 2,100 courses that has been accessed by more than 100 million people. OpenCourseWare will continue, but MITx will be more interactive and provide a greater virtual classroom experience, providing access to online laboratories, student-to-student discussions, and greater interactivity. MIT also expects that MITx will eventually host a virtual community of millions of learners around the world.
The new initiative matches a similar one now underway at Stanford University, in which professors ran three open, online courses this past fall semester, and will expand the program to include 10 more computer science classes beginning next month, including launching startups, technology entrepreneurship, software as a service, natural language processing, and human-computer interaction.

Happy Song of the Day: Cherish the Treasure

This is a beautiful song that I came across recently at one of the weddings that I went to.

Cherish the Treasure - by Steve Green

I cherish the treasure
The treasure of you
Lifelong companion
I give myself to you
God has enabled me
To walk with you faithfully
And cherish the treasure
The treasure of you

As I obey the Spirit's voice
And seek to do His will
I then can see the wisdom of His plan
For as He works His will in me
I then can love you selflessly
And by His grace, can pledge my love to you

Chorus

This sacred vow I make to you
Does not contain an "if"
Though I'm aware that trials lie ahead
I will love you and pray with you
And through it all, I will stay with you
Our home will be a refuge of
Unconditional love

Chorus
Cherish the treasure
The treasure of you

Happy Encounters: Invisibility cloak to protect buildings from earthquakes

This technology sounds amazing. Hope this theory can be realized in practice soon such that buildings can be better protected from earthquakes.

Invisibility cloak to protect buildings from earthquakes from Deccan Chronicle

It's in the realm of imagination, but British scientists claim that it may soon be possible to create a Harry Potter-style 'invisibility cloak' which could be used to protect buildings from earthquakes.
A team at Manchester University says that the prospect of making objects invisible to certain wavelengths in limited circumstances has become more realistic in recent years, and a similar approach could be used to defend structures against earthquakes and other natural disasters.
In the same way that cloaking devices make objects appear invisible by deflecting light around them, the scientists say that pressurised rubber could be used to 'hide' structures from shock waves produced by earthquakes, sending them around the structure rather than through it.
According to team leader Dr William Parnell, the technique could protect nuclear power plants, electric pylons and government buildings from natural disasters or terrorist attacks, The Daily Telegraph reported.
Significant progress has been made, both theoretically and practically in the area of cloaking. We showed theoretically that prestressing a naturally available material - rubber - leads to a cloaking effect from a specific type of elastic wave.

Happy Encounters: American girl, just 12, builds 27 homes in Haiti

If you've been wanting to help others in need, don't just think, but act now!

(Extract from article American girl, just 12, builds 27 homes in Haiti) If there really is something called "helper’s high" - that feel-good sensation that comes from extending a helping hand to others - Rachel Wheeler is soaring.  The 12-year-old Florida resident has done more to aid others than many grown-ups do in a lifetime.
Three years ago, when she was only nine, Rachel tagged along with her mother to a very adult meeting about charity work in Haiti.  She listened as Robin Mahfood, from the aid agency Food For The Poor, describe children so hungry that they eat cookies made of mud, so poor that they sleep in houses made of cardboard.
At the time, Julie Wheeler wasn’t even sure her young daughter understood much of what was being discussed— "until Rachel stood on a chair in front of all those adults and pledged to help Food For The Poor," Wheeler said.
Then a fourth grader, Rachel promised to raise money to build a dozen homes in Haiti.
"Rachel didn’t just want to help," her mother remembers, "but she said she had to help."
Rachel ran bake sales, passed the can at homecoming games and sold homemade potholders at her Zion Lutheran School in Deerfield Beach, Fla. She mailed fundraising appeals to the parents of her friends and the people she knew from church. In her hometown, the Lighthouse Point Chamber of Commerce cut two sizable checks.  Through her Facebook page and word-of-mouth, a cherry farm in Washington heard about Rachel and sent along the proceeds from one of its season's harvest. Another generous donation came from a family that regularly supports the overseas work of Food For The Poor.
In three short years, this little girl raised more than $250,000.

Through her Facebook page and word-of-mouth, a cherry farm in Washington heard about Rachel and sent along the proceeds from one of its season's harvest. Another generous donation came from a family that regularly supports the overseas work of Food For The Poor.

Instead of just building 12 homes, Rachel more than doubled her promise. She spent $170,000 on brand-new earthquake-proof cement structures that shelter 27 families in a small fishing town outside of the capital Port-au-Prince. The families baptized the housing tract "Rachel’s Village."

Character of the Day: Pigs

2 Cute Cuddling Pigs

Do you know what do pigs symbolize / represent?

The pig is a symbol meaning honor and generosity. Pigs symbolize happiness and are notably intelligent.

In Chinese astrology, those born under the sign of the pig love to be needed and feel best when everyone around them is smiling. They see only the best in others and may be exclusive in their friendships. They are nice to a fault and have impeccable manners and taste. Pigs care a great deal about family and friends.

In Germany, pigs are known as a symbol for good luck.

Pig related idioms - "As happy as a pig in mud" is used to signify someone is very happy.

Happy Encounters: Pay It Forward II

Expanding a little more on the idea of 'pay it forward' mentioned in my previous post... came across this article and below are some great tips extracted on what you can do!

The following ideas will help to get you inspired on how you can pay it forward to others with the help of some money. Naturally, you can also pay it forward with love, work, services and many other things that will enlighten other people’s lives.

Think about the power of your smile!

But for those of you who have some spare cash to make a strangers day, here you go:

$0 – $100

1. A few dollars can do so much in terms of making a difference in another persons life.
2. Offer to do the shopping for an elderly neighbor
3. Invite a homeless person for a meal
4. Pay gas for the stranger in the car next to you
5. Buy presents and take them to a children’s hospital
6. Buy a pet for a lonely person
7. Pay a family’s tab in a restaurant
8. Help locals in need
9. Baby sit for new parents and shout them a night at the movies

$ 0 – Free

Paying it forward for free makes all the difference. We don’t need money to show others how much we care:

1. Smile at every person you meet today
2. Walk up to a stranger and hug them while saying “I am thankful to have met you”
3. Offer to do the gardening for an elderly person
4. Cook for a person in need
5. Read stories in a children’s hospital
6. Visit elderly people in an old people’s home and spent some time listening to their stories
7. Volunteer for your local pet shelter or homeless shelter
8. Raise money for a person who lost their home to natural disasters or fire
9. Hold a garage sale and give the proceeds to an organization who helps others
10. Donate your unwanted household goods to the Red Cross

Happy Encounters: Pay It Forward I

At this coffee shop, random acts of kindness top the menu

This concept of paying it forward is really worth putting some thought on. Not sure if I would do the same and just leave a tap on at a coffee house, but would love to adopt that concept to help the people in need, other than just via the usual money donations to the charities.

If you haven't seen the movie 'Pay it Forward', you should definitely check it out! A well inspiring movie.

Happy Encounters: 6 couples on one block married for over 50 years!

6 couples on one block married for over 50 years!

It just gives you such a warm and happy feeling to see these 6 couples living so happily together after so many years.  Am sure it must not have been a smooth ride throughout all those 50+ years of marriage.  This exactly reminds us how important it is to treasure our loved ones, believe in the relationship during the down times in life, and things will eventually turn out great.

Happy Song of the Day: Thank You

Thank You (for loving me) - by Bon Jovi

It's hard for me to say the things
I wanna say sometimes
There's no one here, but you and me
And that broken old street light

Lock the doors
Leave the world outside
All I've got to give to you
Lead five words and I

Thank you for lovin' me
For bein' my eyes
When I couldn't see
For partin' my lips
When I couldn't breathe
Thank you for lovin' me
Thank you for lovin' me

I never knew I had a dream
Until that dream was you
When I look into your eyes
The sky's a different blue
Cross my heart
I wear no disguise
If I tried, you'd make believe
That you believed my lies

Thank you for lovin' me
For bein' my eyes
When I couldn't see
For partin' my lips
When I couldn't breathe
Thank you for lovin' me

You pick me up when I fall down
You ring the bell before they count me outta here
If I was drownin' you would part the sea
And risk your own life to rescue me, yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

Lock the doors
Leave the world outside
All I've got to give to you
These five words tonight

Thank you for lovin' me
For bein' my eyes
Oh and when I couldn't see
For partin' my lips
When I couldn't breathe
Thank you for lovin' me

When I couldn't fly
Oh, you gave me wings
You parted my lips
When I couldn't breathe
Thank you for lovin' me
Thank you for lovin' me
Thaaank you for lovin' me
All for lovin' me

Happy Song of the Day: Just The Way You Are

Here's another song that I love from Bruno Mars.  Perfect song For Her ;)

Just the way you are - by Bruno Mars

Oh, her eyes, her eyes, make the stars look like they're not shining
Her hair, her hair, falls perfectly without her trying
She's so beautiful, and I tell her every day

Yeah, I know, I know, when I compliment her she won't believe me
And it's so, it's so, sad to think that she don't see what I see
But every time she asks me do I look ok, I say

When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing, just the way you are
And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while
Because girl you're amazing, just the way you are(yeah)

Her lips, her lips, I could kiss them all day if she let me
Her laugh, her laugh, she hates but I think it's so sexy
She's so beautiful, and I tell her every day

Oh, you know, you know, you know, I'd never ask you to change
If perfect's what you're searching for then just stay the same
So, don't even bother asking if you look ok
You know I'll say

When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing, just the way you are
And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while
Because girl you're amazing, just the way you are
The way you are, the way you are
Girl you're amazing, just the way you are

When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing, just the way you are
And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while
Cause girl you're amazing, just the way you are. Yeah

Happy Song of the Day: LOVE

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!!

Here's one of my all time favorites that I'd like to share with you.  Hope you enjoy this cute little video that goes with the song :)

L.O.V.E - by Nat King Cole

L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore

And love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it, take my heart and please don't break it
Love was made for me and you

L is for the way you look at me

O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore

And love is all that I can give to you
Love is more than just a game for two
Two in love can make it, take my heart and please don't break it
Love was made for me and you

Love was made for me and you
Love was made for me and you

Happy Song of the Day: Count on Me

As Valentine's Day is just round the corner, would like to dedicate this week to 'Love' that comes in all forms - to your loved ones, family and dear friends :)

Count on Me - by Bruno Mars

If you ever find yourself stuck in the middle of the sea,
I'll sail the world to find you
If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see,
I'll be the light to guide you

Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like 1 2 3
I'll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like 4 3 2
And you'll be there
Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah

Wooooh, Wooooh
yeah Yeah

If you toss and you turn and you just can't fall asleep
I'll sing a song
beside you
And if you ever forget how much you really mean to me
Everyday I will
remind you

Ohh
Find out what we're made of
When we are called to help our friends in need

You can count on me like 1 2 3
I'll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like 4 3 2
You'll be there
Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah

Wooooh, Wooooh
Yeah Yeah

You'll always have my shoulder when you cry
I'll never let go
Never say goodbye

You can count on me like 1 2 3
I'll be there
And I know when I need it I can count on you like 4 3 2
You'll be there
Cause that's what friends are supposed to do, oh yeah

Wooooh, Wooooh
you can count on me cos' I can count on you

Character of the Day: Tigger

From Umnet.com

How much do you know about Tigger besides his orange and black stripey bouncy tail?

Learn a little more about Tigger here and you'll see why Tigger's character fits perfectly as our 'Happy Character of the Day' :)

Tigger is outgoing, cheerful, competitive (in a friendly manner), and fully confident of himself.

He is a bouncy, pouncy, flouncy and a trouncy creature who is always looking to have fun no matter what the situation might be.

When Tigger is in a bouncing mood he is actually expressing his zest for life and is a form which he often uses as a technique to share his eagerness and happiness or even fondness amongst his dear friends.

Happy Song of the Day: Always Look on the Bright Side of Life

Always Look on the Bright Side of Life - by Monty Python

Always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the bright side of life

Some things in life are bad, they can really make you mad
Other things just make you swear and curse
When you're chewing on life's gristle, don't grumble give a whistle
This will help things turn out for the best

Always look on the bright side of life
Always look on the right side of life

If life seems jolly rotten, there's something you've forgotten
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing
When you're feeling in the dumps, don't be silly, chumps
Just purse your lips and whistle, that's the thing

So, always look on the bright side of death
Just before you draw your terminal breath

Life's a counterfeit and when you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's the joke, it's true
You see, it's all a show, keep them laughing as you go
Just remember the last laugh is on you

Always look on the bright side of life
And always look on the right side of life
Always look on the bright side of life
And always look on the right side of life

Happy Encounters: Adventurous Opportunities

From GraphicHunt.com

Recently, I read an interesting article about a guy who gave up law school and became a clown.  Basically, this guy decided law school was not something for him and gave up after the first year; he wanted to pursue a career that was more fun and challenging.  Coincidently, he noticed that a nearby amusement park was hiring for actors.  Although he had no experience, he took the opportunity and was eventually recruited.  From then on, he learned to act, dance, circuit, and clown.  In just six years, he was promoted to the role of assistant program director at the park, responsible for designing all shows within the theme park.

Personally, I think this is a really cool and motivating story.  Life should be fun and adventurous.  This is another example where one can be successful at doing something he or she loves.  I know there are many similar stories around.  However, this again reinforces the idea that if you are passionate about your job (regardless of how strange it may be), success will follow.

Happy Song of the Day: Don't Worry, Be Happy

This is such a great song, so chilling :) Hope you like it too!

Don't Worry, Be Happy - by Bobby Mc Ferrin

Here's a little song i wrote,
you might want to sing it note for note,
don't worry, be happy

in every life we have some trouble,
when you worry you make it double
don't worry, be happy

dont worry be happy now
dont worry be happy
dont worry be happy
dont worry be happy
dont worry be happy
aint got no place to lay your head,
somebody came and took your bed,
don't worry, be happy

the landlord say your rent is late,
he may have to litagate,
dont worry (small laugh) be happy,

look at me im happy,
don't worry, be happy

i give you my phone number,
when your worried, call me,
i make you happy

don't worry, be happy

aint got no cash, aint got no style,
aint got no gal to make you smile
but don't worry, be happy

cos when you worry, your face will frown,
and that will bring everybody down,
so don't worry, be happy

don't worry, be happy now...

don't worry, be happy
don't worry, be happy
don't worry, be happy
don't worry, be happy

now there this song i wrote
i hope you you learned it note for note
like good little children

dont worry be happy

listen to what i say
in your life expect some trouble
when you worry you make it double
dont worry be happy
be happy now

dont worry, be happy
dont worry, be happy
dont worry, be happy
dont worry, be happy
dont worry
dont worry be happy
don't worry, don't worry, don't do it,
be happy, put a smile on your face,
don't bring everybody down like this

don't worry, it will soon pass whatever it is,
don't worry, be happy,
i'm not worried

Happy Encounters: Smiling security lady

There is this ever smiling security lady that I came across today and she reminded me of my earlier resolution, which is to make at least 1 person happy every day, and she's definitely done that.  It is such a good feeling to be so warmly welcomed to a place, particularly from this lady, as when I saw her, it's already late in the evening, she's been standing outdoors in the cold and rain for a while, and she would still happily welcome all the guests to the restaurant.  Most people would have just kept a straight face.  Her genuine greetings has definitely made my day a better day and it feels so good to encounter someone like that in this buzzling city :)

Quote of the Day: Happy town

From sendscraps.com

Quote of the Day: Try to make at least one person happy every day, and then in ten years you may have made three thousand, six hundred and fifty persons happy, or brightened a small town by your contribution to the fund of general enjoyment. - Sydney Smith

I think this is a great thing to do and should set it as part of your new year's resolution!  It can be something really basic such as saying good morning to people around you, starting from your family, neighbours, schoolmates, colleagues.  Being greeted with a good morning and big smile definitely sets my day off on the right note :)

I think this is a particular good and useful thing to do when you are going through a rough / down time.  To make someone happy, you would first have to adjust your mindset to think positively, and this would help steer your thoughts away from negativity.  Our minds are closely connected with our emotions.  When we are feeling down, all the bad things would seem to happen at the same time, but that is because we would tend to just notice things that connected to our state of mind.  This negativity would just continue to grow and spiral downwards.  By tasking yourself to make at least one person happy every day, it would help to shift your focus from the negative thoughts and make your day just a little brighter and happier.

Quote of the Day: Confidence

Quote of the Day: Confidence comes not from always being right but not fearing to be wrong.

Like this quote.  As I read it, it made me pause and think about it.  In many ways, people have a tendency to want to do the right thing to please people around them, to make them feel good about themselves. However by doing so, people would tend to just follow the norm and not think and act out of the box.  To me, I think it really does take some guts to venture into an unknown territory which you think should be the better way of doing things, and not be afraid of rejection or failure.  Act upon what you believe in and not just blindly following the social norm by what is believed to be the right thing to do would be a true person with confidence :)

Quote of the Day: Happy with imperfections

Quote of the Day: Being happy doesn't mean you're perfect. It just means you've decided to look beyond the imperfections. - K.B Indiana (age 14)

Wow.. Can't believe this came from a 14 year old.  No one is perfect and I do think it's so important to accept your imperfections and be proud of who you are to live a happy life.  I'm not saying you should not strive to become a better person, but you should definitely start off from a positive ground ;)
